princessish: (monsters turned out to be just trees)
Beyond Asshai are the Shadow Lands, and to the west of the Shadow Lands there is a collection of small, largely unexplored islands, one of which is Marahai. (Virtually nothing is actually known about this island except its location and therefore presumed mystical energy, so I'm adapting it to suit my purposes. Also it's crescent-shaped and the moon is a crescent, ha ha I'm so hilarious.) Crystalia (Crystal) Amaquelin, First of Her Name though her people don't really use that title, is the much-younger sister of the small island's queen, Medusalith (Medusa). Their parents were rebels (albeit powerful and wealthy ones) who sought to overthrow the royal family (who are largely of Valyrian ancestry too, more on that in a second), purportedly in order to give more power to the lower classes, but as these things happen, they were executed and Medusa and Crystal became wards of that same royal family and later, when Medusa married their prince (Blackagar Boltagon), members of it, the queen and princess.

Such as it is.

The other cool thing about the people on this island is that they've all got some sort of unique, weird magic, and the nature of each person's magic determines their place in society. (You see how little of the actual setup of Inhumans I'm having to change to make it fit in a messed-up pseudomedieval fantasy universe? Yikes.) The ancestors of these magical people fled Old Valyria because their magic made them persecuted, so they set up here. They didn't really learn that much from their suffering, though, so it's still pretty much the same kind of social system. Crystal is royalty now, so she'd be well-off no matter what, but she also happens to have the very useful gift of elemental control/manipulation, so she's also easily among the most useful of her fellow citizens.

And she still has a big stupid wonderful dog.

So in the recent past a new and somewhat more successful coup by the king's brother displaced most of the royal family. Crystal was kept around at first to make the people trust said brother (and probably marry him too, which is disgusting) but she fought back, then hightailed it out of there on the first trading ship she could find. With her big stupid dog.

She's a displaced princess, but unlike other such nobles in GOT/ASOIAF, she has virtually no political ambitions. She's very naive, and she's undoubtedly benefited from the problematic treatment of others in a secondhand way, but she has no desire to subjugate or persecute or anything like that. She wants to help, in a very innocent way. (Though she'd be fun to drag into uprisings, because if rebelliousness is a natural trait and not a nurtured one she has some of that in her and also because of said elemental magic.) Her main priorities right now are avoiding the reach of her maniacal brother-in-law and seeing the world; as a princess of a highly isolated society on a highly isolated island in a highly isolated corner of the world, she lacks life experience in a serious way. She conveniently escaped with plenty of money/financial security, because that makes telling the story much more convenient, and she's basically just bouncing around the more "known" parts of the world exploring and learning about things and trying not to get killed.

So tl;dr change the setting to that pseudomedieval thing, replace the moon with an island and Inhumans with general magic, and ignore her terrible family. Here she is.
